REPORT ON PAD A GIRL CHILD IN OZALLA HIGH SCHOOL, OZALLA, ENUGU STATE, NIGERIA

17th October 2024

Team members that facilitated the program:

1) Mrs. Rita Chinazaekpere Udeagu (Assistant Project Coordinator & Graphic Designer)
2) Fr. Nwankwo Michael Ugo (Project Coordinator)
3) Miss Idoko Chinwendu Peace (Treasurer)
4) Miss Madukaife Lydia C (Welfare/Procurement Manager)
5) Jennifer… (Education Coordinator)
6) Chisom (field worker)

It was a mixed school located in a rural part of the Nkanu West local government area, Enugu. The boys were wearing beautiful white top shirts and blue shorts (for junior boys) or trousers (for senior boys), while the girls were wearing white top shirts and elegant smart blue skirts.
The entire class of over 600, comprising both junior and secondary students, was already ending their morning assembly and matching to their different areas of the moral instruction hall considering that day was their normal Thursday moral instruction day.

The principal, Mr. Ejike Akaeme (not yet in school due to circumstances), welcomed us through the telephone call and directed us to her vice principal.
The Vice Principal directed us to their beautiful hall chosen for the SS1-SS3 girls (numbering over 300 in attendance), our target audience, who were impressively organised and singing praises in readiness for us.

We began our speech around 8.30am with an introduction of who we are and our reason for coming by Fr. Nwankwo Michael Ugo for about 5 minutes. He reminded the young girls we, the “Aguike Foundation for Health and Educational Empowerment” members, came for the “Pad a Girl Child” project of this year in collaboration with 11th October, 2024, International Girl Child Day marked globally. Other members of the team were introduced by Fr. Mike Nwankwo Ugo.

Miss Idoko Chinwendu amazingly educated the young girls on the meaning of menstrual hygiene as a fresh graduate of the medical laboratory from our prestigious University of Nigeria, Naukka (UNN), Enugu.
She opened their eyes to the female biological make-up, proper healthy care of the girl Child, and harmful aspects of the girl’s unhealthy menstrual hygiene.
It was highly interactive as the girls happily asked questions and shared personal stories to illustrate their points.

Sanitary pads were shared with them afterwards.
One of the senior girls chosen thanked us for coming and prayed for us to keep growing.

We thanked the management of the school for giving us the opportunity to come and encouraged the students to make the best use of their time in school and to graduate with flying colours.
We concluded at about 9.00 am with a closing prayer and blessing by Fr. Michael Nwankwo Ugo.
We took extra pictures and made beautiful videos outside the hall.

A few senior girls kept meeting Miss Chinwendu Peace Idoko to get clarification and counselling outside the hall privately.
We thanked the vice principal and a few teachers that came, and we dropped two cartons extra for their sanitary pad bank.

Finally, the director, Fr. Agu Aloysius Ike, called on video call before and after the program to encourage and appreciate both in words and in cash the effort of the team members.
The “Pad a Girl Child” project was highly successful, awesome, and amazing.
Glory be to God.
